WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?Hyaluronic acid, (AKA hyaluronan and sodium hyaluronate), is a clear, gooey substance that is naturally produced by our body. The largest amounts of it are found in your skin, connective tissue and eyes. Its main function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist. Hyaluronic acid is well known for its skin benefits, especially alleviating dry skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and speeding up wound healing. If your goal is to reduce facial wrinkles and moisturize your skin, using a hyaluronic acid serum can be a great idea. 1. Hydration: Hyaluronic acid penetrates the skin and binds water to skin cells, and is able to hold up to 1,000 times its molecular weight in water. 2. HA is a powerful humectant: Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant bringing moisture to the surface of your skin from the surrounding environment, providing lasting hydration for the skin. 3. Wound healing: Hyaluronic acid concentrations increase when there is damage in need of repair and helps wounds heal faster reducing the size of wounds and decreasing pain faster, also regulates inflammation levels and signals the body to build more blood vessels in the damaged area. Hyaluronic acid also has antibacterial properties, so it can help reduce the risk of infection when applied directly to open wounds. 4. Skin protection: Skin’s main function is to protect our body and is the top layer of the skin (the epidermis) the one that takes most of the outside damage. As we age, our skin starts losing its ability to protect us and everything from UV rays, to environmental pollution, to lifestyle choices cause damage that results in fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, and drier skin. Hyaluronic Acid fortifies the skin’s natural barriers to help lock moisture in, helping to slow down the deterioration of the lipid barrier. 5. Tighter, firmer and smoother skin: As we age, collagen and elastin production slows down and the skin starts sagging. Hyaluronic Acid can't replace the elastin, but can help with the appearance of tightness, as can fill the skin with moisture by retaining water, tightening the overall complexion resulting in a more youthful and smooth appearance that you can see and feel. Studies suggest that hyaluronic acid can help boost collagen production in the human body. 6. Skin cell regeneration: As we age the cell turnover starts taking longer, and what used to be 28 days will take now around 90 days, with this our appearance changes. This process can't be sped up, but hyaluronic acid will help to promote skin cell regeneration by offering extra hydration and barrier protection to the skin.
